Using botanical materials gathered locally and others sourced from afar—flowers, branches, leaves, and yes even some cochineal beetles—transform an unbleached canvas tote bag and pair of cotton socks (provided) into any color of a rustic rainbow.  Embrace a phase change for your favorite wardrobe staples that need new life, all of your experiments are welcome here! Got a spot on a beloved tee, but just can’t bear to part with it? Add it to the dye bath, shift the trajectory of decay towards impermanence and change.

You will learn how to:

  • Shift a dye bath using mordants made from household additives that are safe, organic, and non-toxic

  • Learn a handful of traditional shibori tie dye techniques

  • Identify local flora that you can use for your future creative pursuits

Date/Time: Sunday, July 27, 10am-12pm; please arrive 10-15 minutes early to grab a beverage and meet your fellow classmates

Materials: each participant will receive a a canvas tote and pair of cotton socks, plus use of several natural dyes and all necessary supplies

Bring with you: any extra garment or fabric item that is made of cotton, wool, linen, or silk

Class size: Class is limited to 8 students

About Elizabeth: Elizabeth Doering’s commitment to more sustainable practices in textile design is deeply linked to her journey as a yoga instructor, and student of buddhist philosophy and mindfulness. Elizabeth has studied with renowned textile teachers from coast to coast, earning a BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design and taking fabric dye classes from the costume designers at Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s repertory theatre in Ashland, Oregon. elizabethdoering.com
