Cryptids of the Pacific Northwest shares the stories of over 20 cryptids—and includes a few hoaxes and unusual animals as well. With each cryptid, I share the legend, and then use expert interviews, newspaper articles and books, and internet deep dives to offer insights into what the creature might actually be, whether new species, misidentified known species, or hoax. The book also includes over 60 black-and-white photos, newspaper clippings, and original illustrations by artist Kate Rosendale.
Featured creatures include:
Ballard Sea Serpent; Batsquatch; Bear Lake Monster; Bremerton Shrimp Monster; Caddy the Cadborosaurus; California Condors; Colossal Claude (featuring Old Hairy and Marvin the Monster); Flathead Lake Monster; Giant Crabs of Wallowa Lake; Giant Palouse Earthworm; Iliamna Lake Monster; King Octopus of Tacoma; Ogopogo; Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus; Pend Oreille Paddler; Ringdocus, aka The Madison Monster, aka Guyasticutus; Sasquatch; Sharlie, aka Slimy Slim; Steller’s Sea Ape; Wallowa Lake Monster, aka Big Wally; Willatuk, “The Lake Washington Sea Monster”
From the publisher:
The Pacific Northwest is a land of secrets, legends, and some might even say monsters. Stories of cryptids—hidden animals—are whispered throughout the region’s history, told in everything from bashful confidences to bold headlines. Unusual creatures like the Cadborosaurus have been sighted in the Salish Sea, while the Pend Oreille Paddler is rumored to live inland, and the rugged Pacific coast may be hiding more scaled, tailed, finned, and furred sea cryptids in remote harbor. It’s said that one can sometimes catch a glimpse of a hulking bat-humanoid winging its way across gray skies. The foggy forests are said to hide everything from an arboreal octopus to the king of cryptids, Sasquatch. Through historic and contemporary newspaper articles, expert interviews, and retellings of local legends, author and professional weirdo Devon Kelley uncovers the hidden creatures of the Cascades.
Details:
Softback copy: 9” x 6”; 157 pages, including 30,000 words editorial (115 pages) and notes/bibliography (42 pages)
Hardback copy: I don’t know! We’re gonna find out together 🤝 (I’ll update this section when I hear back from my publisher)
